ATA President Willis Thomas, Jr. Comments on the 2007 ATA
Nationals
“The most
important thing is that we
had over 300 Junior entrants, which
was the most exciting thing to me:
putting that many kids in an expensive
place like New York.”
Willis Thomas, Jr., President
“I thought it was a good tournament. I thought the events were nice. We
had some good social events. And I thought the most important thing is
that we had over 300 Junior entrants, which was the most exciting thing
to me: putting that many kids in an expensive place like New York. It
lets me know that our people are starting to look at the ATA as a good
tournament to take their kids. Each of the Junior Finals was played at
Flushing Meadows with a chair umpire. That was a great experience for
them. All-in-all, I thought it was a good tournament. In spite of the
rain on Monday, we managed to get back on track and finish the
tournament on time.
“Next year, we’re going back to Daytona Beach. We were there three years
ago and people liked the venue. I think that next year we’re going to
try to start the Juniors a little earlier—maybe on the Thursday before
the Senior events start. That will give us a chance to focus just on the
youngsters. When they are playing at the same time as the adults, they
kind of have to share in the experience. We want to put most of our
focus on the Juniors, and then after that we can put most of our focus
on the adult tournament.” |
