Dr. Gary Sailes Becomes New Member of the Black Tennis Pro Registry
Where there's unity, there's strength
“You are what you think, you become what you believe!”
This is the philosophy of sport psychologist and mental strength coach Gary “Doc” Sailes, an award winning professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University. Doc has traveled the country and abroad for over 35 years working with athletes, coaches and sports teams on the development of core mental training strategies to enhance athletic performance. He is a former high school, college and USPTA certified tennis coachand the author of several books, CD’s and DVD’s on mental toughness training strategies for sports. He is currently working on his seventh book titled “Think Like a Winner, Play Like a Champion!” His clients have included state andnational champions including athletes and teams from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA, PGA of America, NIKE All-America Camp, and professional tour players in golf and tennis.
Doc Sailes uses a holistic approach to get athletes to perform atconsistently higher levels turning losses into wins. His athlete clients have sometimes experienced immediate results as they learn how to mentally get out of their own way and get the wins they covet. The core mental skills Doc teaches are building/maintaining confidence, management of pressure, visualization/imagery, focus/concentration and motivation. To enter the “Zone” Doc says the athlete needs just two basic elements: 1. Quiet confidence and 2. Focused intent. The athlete must believe in their T.A.G.S. (talents, abilities, gifts and skills) and trust their ability to perform.
The key to this belief is to play with the anchor words “I CAN” in mind. Doc teaches “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!” Focused intent means to have a game plan and to focus exclusively on the execution of that game plan making adjustments when necessary. The tennis player should keep their eyes focused on court and keep in mind what they want to do strategically and tactically. The quieter and more focused the mind, the better the athlete performs. Random and negative thoughts are like putting unleaded regular fuel into a high performance car like a Ferrari. You need high performance fuel to make the engine in a high performance car, like a Ferrari, run at peak performance. High performance fuel to the elite athlete are confidence, focus and intent.
Doc noted that working with tennis players and coaches and organizations like the USPTA, PTR, USTA and ATA signaled the beginning of his long and distinguished career as a mental strength coach. He has not forgotten his roots and continues to work with tennis players when the opportunity presents itself. He was a featured clinician at the recent American Tennis Association national training camp in Houston. The athletes enjoyed his presentation and took his teachings to the court. The one thing the athletes remembered most was the anchor words, “I Can!” He taught the players that if you believe you can succeed, you increase the likelihood that it will happen. In all, Doc taught the athletes to “See it, Feel it, Do it!” Doc and his family currently reside in Indianapolis.
